The eighth fixture of the 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) sees Guyana Amazon Warriors take on St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts. The match is scheduled to begin at 12am (midnight) IST.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, the sole hosts of CPL 2021, currently sit atop the points table with two wins in as many outings but they could potentially be demoted by the start of this match – provided that Trinbago Knight Riders win their match earlier in the day and overcome the net run rate differential.

Even if that does happen, the Patriots will still get a chance to climb back up the table later tonight, thanks to them being the only undefeated side left despite the tournament having just begun.

Their first win came against Barbados Royals and the second one against none other than Guyana Amazon Warriors, whom they defeated just last night but face again tonight. That happens when you have to play 33 matches in just 21 days.

Anyway, the match last night between these two sides was one-sided. The Patriots restricted the Warriors to just 146-8 — a target their batters reached comfortable for the loss of just two wickets and more than an over to spare.

Devon Thomas and Evin Lewis shared a 113-run stand for the first wicket. Surprisingly though, Thomas was deemed the player of the match even though his unbeaten but laborious 55 came off 54 balls and Lewis’ whirlwind 62 took just 39 balls.

Guyana started CPL 2021 with a huge upset win over defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders but they were not quite impressive even though they got the result. They had posted a target of just 143 and if it wasn’t for their bowling unit, they’d have lost.

Last night, too, their batters posted a similarly average total but this time the Patriots batters, especially their openers, were up to the task and did not leave the door open for any surprises.

A notable failure with the bat in both their outings was their uber experienced import from Pakistan: Shoaib Malik. A 12-ball two in the opener was followed by a 12-ball five last night. Add to it the fact that he does not bowl now and you’ve got quite a liability on your hands.

Due to his stature, Malik would likely get at least another chance but he needs to deliver as soon as possible. Not that he is the only culprit but others have not failed as spectacularly as him.

Conclusion

All things point towards a St Kitts win but the Warriors, before their defeat last night, had won four straight times against St Kitts. That keeps the door open for a surprise result but otherwise the Patriots should take this.
