Indian Super League (ISL) Betting Tips

ISL, how it started, where it is at

The main purpose of launching ISL obviously was to generate funds, cultivate new talent and give exposure to India’s footballing talent at the national stage.

With that being the mission, the inaugural season of the ISL began with eight teams and was played over just three months. Back then, it was not recognized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) but before the 2017-18 season, it earned the continental governing body’s recognition, too.

The recognition coincided with the ISL adding two more franchises and doubling the campaign size from three months to six. An 11th team was added later, giving the league its present structure.

The ISL, played under the round robin format, has ATK Mohun Bagan, Bengaluru, Chennaiyin, SC East Bengal, Goa, Hyderabad, Jamshedpur, Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City, NorthEast United and Odisha comprising its current roster.

ISL format

The ISL is also unique in the sense that it awards two major titles out of just one league. At the end of the round robin stage, whichever team finishes at the top, are declared the Premiers and given the League Winners’ Shield as well as an entry into the AFC Champions League.

Meanwhile, the top four teams, including the league winners, also face each other in the play-offs, whose winners get to lift the ISL Trophy and rewarded with an entry into the AFC Cup.

Winners so far

The inaugural season of the ISL was won by the now defunct Atletico de Kolkata. In fact, the franchise has won three of the seven championships staged so far, including the 2019-20 season.

Apart from Atletico, Chennaiyin have also had success, winning the ISL twice – once in 2015 and then again in the 2017-18 season.

The league’s defending champions are Mumbai City, who defeated ATK Mohan Bagan 2-1 in the final of the 2021 season.

Statistical leaders

The ISL’s current all-time leading goal scorer is Spain’s Ferrán Corominas, who has 48 goals to his name in just 57 appearances. However, since the 38-year-old Goa forward has already left the ISL, he is unlikely to add to his tally.

Meanwhile, local hero Sunil Chhetri, who captains Bengaluru FC, is just a goal behind, with 47 to his name. If all goes according to plan, he should take the honour from Coro in the next season, next year.

Elsewhere, the player with the most caps in ISL is Mandar Rao Dessai, who has 114 outings in the league. Since, he is still just 29, he should keep on adding to his haul of ISL caps.

On the goal making front, France and Mumbai City’s Hugo Boumous rules the roost, with a staggering 24 assists in just 58 matches at a rate of 0.41 assists a game.

The goalkeepers tied for the record of the most number of clean sheets are Bengaluru’s Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, ATK Mohun Bagan’s Arindam Bhattacharya and Mumbai City’s Amrinder Singh – all three of whom have overseen 29 matches with no goals conceded.

Betting on ISL

It has been stated before that the general rule for any sporting competition is that whoever has the greater talent should come out on top nine times out of 10.

As of right now, defending champions Mumbai City have a playmaker extraordinaire in Boumus, a reliable gloveman in Amrinder, Nigerian marksman Bartholomew Ogbeche, the uber experienced Mandar Rao Dessai and several more.

They seem ripe for a few more deep runs at the very least.

Then, there is Bengaluru FC, for whom Chhetri, the soon-to-be record goalscorer, plays. They are coming off of a poor seventh-place finish but they do have the power and influence to improve their roster any given year.

Two-time winners Chennaiyin FC can never be counted out as well, while the legacy and pedigree of ATK Mohun Bagan, coupled with their run to the final in the ISL Trophy last season, suggests that they are destined for big things as well.

FAQs

Is the ISL prone to match-fixing?
In the 2015 ISL Trophy final, FC Goa had conceded twice in stoppage time and somehow managed to lose 3-2 from an advantage of 2-1. It had led to allegations of fixing by FC Goa. Meanwhile, a few officials have, at times, warned the players of being wary of match-fixing sharks. But both those instances fall under unsubstantiated hunches and warnings, and punters should not be overly alarmed.
Where can I check ISL stats?
