Teams Status
Quetta Gladiators
Quetta Gladiators, for the second year in a row, are on the verge of crashing out of PSL. They have won just one match in seven outings this season and just two in 12 when sample size is extended a bit further.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, once considered captain dependable, has often cut a forlorn figure, and even though team owner Nadeem Omar has often said that Sarfaraz will remain the captain as long as he plays, truth is that the franchise needs fresh impetus and leadership.
The Gladiators have fallen from being the most consistent side to the punching bags of PSL, and as much as Sarfaraz diehards would argue, a bunch of blame has to fall on his shoulders.
All Quetta are left with now is a mathematical chance of making the playoffs and the door will close even on that if they lose to Lahore, which they have in their previous four matchups.
Troubling part is that both the matches they have lost have been extremely one-sided, with one of them being the biggest defeat for any team in PSL history: the 10-wicket thumping at the hands of Islamabad.
Are there any realistic chances of a Quetta revival? Slim to none.
Lahore Qalandars
Lahore have played three, won two and lost one of their three matches so far in Abu Dhabi leg. The first two wins have already been talked about a lot but their defeat, in their last match, had a distinct pattern in both the innings.
While bowling first against Islamabad, Lahore bowlers had reduced their opponents to 20-5 but then took their foot off the pedal and allowed Iftikhar Ahmed and Asif Ali to pile up a decent 152-7.
Then, they were cruising at 55-0 when wheels suddenly and inexplicably came off their run chase as they lost their next nine wickets for the addition of just 45 runs.
Loss of focus being a bit too comfortable in their positions of advantage is to blame for the defeat that also saw them surrender the top spot to Islamabad, albeit only on net run rate.
Lahore, as it has been said multiple times, have the best squad in the tournament and should get back right on track – especially when the task is against the lowly Gladiators, whom they have defeated four straight times.
