Karachi Kings
Two straight defeats to begin the Abu Dhabi leg have brought defending champions Karachi Kings down to Earth. It’s not just the results that must have annoyed the Karachi faithful but the manner of them too.
Against Multan, their top order, including star batsman and captain Babar Azam, played super slowly, and that piled up pressure on them to find runs at a much quicker pace in the second half of their unsuccessful run chase.
Then, against Islamabad, they amassed 190-4 and should have cruised to victory with that big a total to defend. But then Colin Munro and Iftikhar Ahmed went berserk and made sure that Islamabad won with more than an over to spare.
Karachi have slipped to fourth in the standings and will soon enter the race with Multan Sultans to avoid elimination, if their results do not improve immediately.
Peshawar Zalmi
Peshawar Zalmi have fared little better than Karachi since the restart. Of their three matches, they have lost two, with their sole victory coming against Quetta Gladiators, beating whom should not be deemed an achievement these days due to their own spectacular slump.
Peshawar, in their latest defeat, which came against Multan, posted an okay, if not sizable, 167-2 but their bowlers were helpless in the face of Mohammad Rizwan and Sohaib Maqsood’s controlled aggression and stroke play. Their target was achieved with almost four overs to spare.
The Javed Afridi-owned side must have felt that they were at least 20 runs short, with the main culprits being their openers Haider Ali and Kamran Akmal, both of whom batted at strike rates of 93.33 and 129.62 respectively. With the ball, a bulk of their pace attack was expensive and leaked runs like a sieve against the Sultans.
