Teams Status
Karachi Kings
Not too long ago, Karachi Kings were considered the sleeping giants of the PSL and second only to Lahore Qalandars on the list of laughing stocks slash underachievers extraordinaire. But their title from last season coupled with their locally crafted opening duo of Babar Azam and Sharjeel Khan means that they are now living up to their big name and certainly are the team to beat.
Their first task of the restart will be against their most favourite opponents Multan, against whom they have a staggering 75% win record, which could have been even higher if two of their eight matches had not ended in no-result.
In fact, Karachi have only ever lost once to Multan, which was back in Multan’s own backyard in first of their three meetings last year. Their next match was washed out while the Kings had edged out Multan vi a one-over eliminator in their playoffs meeting last year.
This season, Karachi thrashed Multan by seven wickets in their first meeting but through very little fault of their own as Karachi captain Babar Azam was in one of his moods. His unbeaten 90 helped Karachi track down 196 with ease.
Karachi have replaced Colin Ingram, Mohammad Nabi, Dan Christian, Joe Clarke and Liton Das with Thisara Perera, Najibullah Zadran and Martin Guptill for the rest of the tournament. There isn’t much of a loss.
Multan Sultans
Multan Sultans were the round robin stage winners last year but were a shell of their former self after the restart and ended up losing both their matches in playoffs and crashed out.
This year, they were poor to begin the tournament with and are currently sitting second-last on the point table above only Quetta Gladiators. They have just one victory after the first five matches and seem set to miss out on the playoffs barring an instant turnaround. It remains to be seen whether the Covid-induced break this year will do them more harm (if that’s even possible) or change their fortunes.
On paper, they look weaker than how they were back in March when the league went on hiatus. They’ve lost Chris Lynn, James Vince, Adam Lyth, Carlos Brathwaite, Obed McCoy, Shahid Afridi and Mahmudullah, while incoming players are Blessing Muzarabani, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Asif Afridi, Hammad Azam and Shimron Hetmyer, with only the West Indies start at the very last being a decent recruit.
