Teams Status
Sunrisers Hyderabad will be hoping that third time’s the charm when they take on Mumbai Indians – by far the IPL’s winningest side. The Orange Army have lost both of their first two matches of this campaign, albeit with slim margins. They fell just 10 runs short in their tournament opener against Kolkata Knight Riders and were again shy by six runs in the follow-up game against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In both the defeats, their bowlers did alright but their batting let them down, especially in the defeat to RCB, when all they had to do was chase down a 150-run target but still couldn’t.
For a team that has a long-ish tail, SRH cannot afford its top order to misfire. While captain David Warner was among the runs (54) in the last game, his fellow opener Wriddhiman Saha has had back-to-back failures, the second of which was an even bigger one as he produced just a single run off nine balls. He will be under tremendous pressure to perform against Mumbai this weekend. Also under pressure will be one-down batsman Manish Pandey, who has scored runs in both the matches but at a poor strike rate. His lethargy has not gone unnoticed in the media and he might want to score at a better rate or run the risk of being labeled a stat padder.
Mumbai Indians almost pulled of the defence of their 159 in the tournament opener against RCB. The job they only failed at on the final ball, they pulled off the very next game against KKR, restricting them to 142 after posting a second straight not-so-sizable total of 152.
The nature of their two matches proves that while their batting is misfiring a bit, their bowling unit is up to their lofty standards. While their pace duo of Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah have always been reliable, their uncapped South African find Marco Jansen has taken to IPL like a duck to water. Their victory over KKR, though, was the construct of their spin duo Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya – the former picking four wickets and the latter giving away just 13 runs in their four overs each.
Their batting has underperformed so far but based on their long and successful track record, there is nothing to worry about and they can catch fire any time.
