West Indies
Since the first T20I did not finish, there is no definitive conclusion to draw from it. On its face, it seems as if Pakistan had the upper hand because they had sent half the West Indies line-up back to the pavilion for just 85 runs. On the other hand, the Windies were batting at the pace of nearly 10 runs an over, with their captain Kieron Pollard still at the crease.
A few more overs of the West Indies skipper could have seen them reach 150 or even surpass it, which, on a difficult track, could have made the chase difficult.
That said, the hosts were in a position of disadvantage and struggling against Pakistan’s spin-heavy attack, which they may have to face a lot of for the rest of the series.
Pakistan
Pakistan carried out their game plan quite effectively in the series opener. They used a three-man spin attack and had just as many pacers. Ever since Lendl Simmons got retired hurt early on, they never let the Windies batters settle, picking up wickets at regular intervals.
However, the flow of wickets did not cause any damage to the rate of scoring, which was one cause of concern for Babar Azam and co.
Surprisingly, Shaheen Afridi, their star pacer, was ineffective, picking up no wickets for 20 runs in his two overs.
Windies might have to make a change or two, especially if Simmons does not recover. But Pakistan do not have any need to chop and change. Expect them to field the same line-up again.
