Teams Status
Australia
Just as we thought and predicted, the opening T20I was a low scoring affair and Australia suffered a massive humiliation of an upset.
Those responsible for the humiliation were certainly not the bowlers, as they had restricted the hosts to a paltry 131-7. But their batsmen just could not survive the Bangladeshi spin, losing to them six of their 10 wickets.
Their tormentor-in-chief, though, was slow left-arm orthodox Nasum Ahmed, who finished with 19-4 in his quota of as many overs.
The Aussies lost their first wicket on the first ball of the run chase, and never recovered. Apart from Mitchell Marsh (45), no one else offered any resistance as they got bundled out for an embarrassing total of 108.
It has to be said now that this batting line-up is the weakest ever for Australia’s men’s national team.
Bangladesh
Their first-ever T20I victory over Australia must have tasted sweet for Bangladesh, especially when they did not just defeat the mighty Aussies, they humbled them.
That said, Bangladesh’s own batting display was not without its faults. They were able to defend the measly 131 this time but it’s pretty much a lock that the Aussie batsmen would bounce back, and when they do, the home team will not be able to make such small totals work.
The Tigers’ problems were against a completely different style of bowling. Where the Aussies struggled against spin, the home side was unable to handle the pace of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
Shakibal Hasan top scored with 36 but he will need more help if Bangladesh are to keep their lead intact for the rest of the series.
