Teams Status
Delhi Capitals, thanks to their win over Punjab Kings last night, now have four points to their name. They owe their latest two points to their in-form opener Shikhar Dhawan. The lefty again missed out on an IPL ton but his 92 off 49 laid the found of his team’s victory in a sizable run chase. He played at such a pace that when Marcus Stoinis scored the winning runs, almost two overs were left to play, which is quite an achievement considering they were chasing almost 200 runs.
Dhawan has dazzled twice in three IPL matches this season. He will again be the biggest threat to Mumbai Indians bowlers on Tuesday night.
The Delhi top order will also be keen to atone for their horror start in the IPL final last year when their failure reduced their team to 3-22 – a setback they never recovered from and ended up missing out on what would have been their maiden title.
Mumbai Indians, too, have four points but while Delhi’s two wins are sandwiched between a defeat, theirs have been consecutive and came after a loss in their opening game. It means Mumbai are on a two-match winning streak.
What’s impressive about Mumbai so far is that their bowlers have done more than a decent job in their victories, managing to defend 152 against Kolkata Knight Riders and 150 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. They almost defended 159 on the opening night as well but lost on the final ball of the match.
Spin duo of Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar along with usual suspects Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult have all contributed their share with the ball.
But what is their strength is also their weakness. Mumbai’s bowling unit has had to work overtime because their batsmen have not been managing big totals. In fact, 159, 152 and 150 show that their production is actually diminishing.
Rohit Sharma has had starts but failed to truly hit top gear as we’re used to seeing him. Same goes for Quinton de Kock and the lower middle-order featuring Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya. It appears as if Mumbai batters are still basking in the glory of their 2020 triumph. Knowing their pedigree, though, it’s a matter of time before they get serious.
