Teams Status
Sydney Thunder
Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers have an equal number of points ahead of their final round-robin fixtures but the latter sit second and former third due to net run rate difference.
With the Sixers scheduled to play Brisbane Heat earlier in the day, when this game begins, the Thunder would know what’s required of them to reclaim the second spot, which brings with itself a direct route to the final.
The Thunder’s hot run around the New Year has been somewhat dampened, thanks to twin defeats to Hobart Hurricanes and the Sixers in their last two games.
That said, those defeats were against major sides, and the Heat are nowhere near their caliber.
Melbourne Renegades
Melbourne Renegades let go of a big chance to cause an upset and vacate the bottom of the points table as they lost to Hobart Hurricanes despite being in a commanding position.
Chasing 183, the Gades were cruising at 138-1 in the 15th over, with 45 needed off 31 balls – an easy task when you have nine wickets in hand.
But in yet another reminder of why they are last and why they have been last the last two campaigns, Melbourne middle-order froze as they finished at 176-6.
They will get one more chance to swap places with Brisbane Heat on the points table but it won’t get any easier as the Thunder are a powerhouse.
