Quetta Gladiators
Quetta Gladiators have had two woeful years since winning their maiden title in 2019. They finished second last in 2020 and dead bottom last year, which is surprising considering they used to be arguably the most consistent side in the league over the first four years.
They acquired James Vince and Shahid Afridi from Multan Sultans via trades and swapped Azam Khan with for Iftikhar Ahmed from Islamabad. Meanwhile, Jason Roy is back and a bunch of new overseas faces, including James Faulkner, Luke Wood, Ben Duckett and Shimron Hetmyer.
There is no more Faf du Plessis, who played just five games anyway last year before being injured.
Problem for Quetta is that neither of Vince and Roy will be available for the start of tournament due to England’s ongoing tour of the West Indies. Iftikhar, though obviously talent, has never really got going in PSL. It means that there is once again a question mark on Quetta’s batting. They have made additions to bowling unit, which means the young shoulders of Mohammad Hasnain will have support. His future is uncertain too with his action set to be scrutinized by the ICC.
Peshawar Zalmi
Peshawar Zalmi were the losing finalists last year when they were beaten by Multan Sultans. During the offseason they promoted assistant coach James Foster and made him the top man. The Darren Sammy era at Zalmi is officially over.
Zalmi’s main focus this year was to retain their main players. They did lose a quartet of bowling options namely Mohammad Irfan, Umaid Asif and Mohammad Imran but did sign Ben Cutting. Mujeeb Ur Rahman is also no more on their books. Those taking their place are part-timers or just plain average.
While bowling may seem a little light due to all the departures, Zalmi batting does pack a punch. If Liam Livingstone and Hazratullah Zazai open for them the opposition bowlers are likely to have sleepless nights.
It is safe to say that Zalmi will be a batting-driven side this PSL whose bowlers will often have to bear the brunt of criticism.
