Lahore Qalandars
Lahore Qalandars suffered a massive upset on Friday when they were beaten by none other than Karachi Kings – by far the worst side in the competition.
The Qalandars, having dismissed the port city side for just 149, must have felt good about their chances of adding another easy win to their tally.
However, they lost Fakhar Zaman in just the second over of their innings and sucked the life out of their run chase. As Karachi bowler Mir Hamza picked up wicket after wicket, the Qalandars’ pursuit of 150 got derailed.
Mohammad Hafeez top scored with 33, while Harry Brook (26) and David Wiese (31) showed some resistance later but no one else spent much time at the crease as Karachi got off the mark in the competition.
A defeat to the league’s worst side could potentially do Lahore’s confidence a world of harm. Thus, it will be important to see how they react here.
Islamabad United
Islamabad are currently holding the fourth and final playoffs spot, thanks to their haul of eight being two more than fifth-placed Quetta Gladiators’ tally of six.
The capital city side have played a game less than Quetta so that’s another big advantage.
However, they have lost two of their last three games so the management must also have an eye on the loss column, to which an addition was made on Thursday when they lost to Peshawar Zalmi.
The defeat came in an unsuccessful but not unimpressive run chase. Islamabad were on track to chasing down a gargantuan 206 when Azam Khan – who had been on fire until then – was holed out in the penultimate over, which derailed the run chase.
