After losing the Test series to Australia at home, Pakistan now face the equally difficult task of facing the same opponents albeit in an ODI series, the first of which will be played on March 29 (Wednesday) at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. The match is to begin at 3:30pm IST.

Teams Status

Australia

Already without Steve Smith for the series, Australia were dealt another blow on Tuesday as their star allrounder Mitchell Marsh was sidelines due to a hip injury.

The duo’s unavailability further depletes Australia, who were already without Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, and David Warner for the series.

Australia were last active in this format way back in July 2021 when they played a three-match series against West Indies and one 2-1.

The Aussies are currently placed seventh in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League standings, having won six of their nine fixtures.

Pakistan

Pakistan players do not play the Indian Premier League due to political tensions, which is why they are the only top side with a full-strength roster at this time of the year.

Thus, their IPL embargo becomes a blessing in disguise as they face a weakened Australia while they themselves have all their options available.

Star allrounder Shadab Khan is doubtful for the first two games of the series but still Pakistan should find ample replacements.

Pakistan are tenth in the Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League standings, with just four wins out of nine.

Due to the state of the Australian roster, they are the underdogs in this fixture. Parimatch has Pakistan priced at 1.61 and Australia at 2.28. Paripesa has Pakistan available for 1.676 and Australia for 2.225. Lastly, Sportsbet has Pakistan priced at 1.62 and Australia at 2.32.

Tipster’s Angle

Tip: Pakistan to win @ 1.676

The way Pakistan are composed, the shorter the format, the stronger they are. If this were a T20 game, they’d probably be even bigger favourites. Unless they play timid cricket again, which they certainly did in the Test series and paid the price, Pakistan should take this series 2-1. We’re siding with the home side in the opening ODI. The odds have been sourced from Paripesa.

Tip: Babar Azam to score more than 39.5 runs @ 1.87

Babar Azam’s captaincy was rocked for the first time in the recent Test series. While he himself performed admirably, the team played negative cricket for much of the series. This is his chance to erase that stain. He averages 52 in ODI against Australia and a staggering 84.20 in ODIs played in Pakistan, it means he rarely fails in similar sort of conditions. Therefore, we back him to not fail here either. The odds have been sourced from Parimatch.

Conclusion

The last time these two teams met in an ODI series, it was 2019 and the venue was the UAE. Australia had beaten Pakistan 5-0 in that series. This is Pakistan’s opportunity to avenge that loss.
