Few thought they’d see the day when Mumbai Indians would start an IPL campaign with four straight defeats. Yet here we are. The five-time IPL champions have yet to open their account this season and would be hoping to get fifth-time lucky when they face Punjab Kings on April 13 (Wednesday) at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. The match is to begin at 7:30pm IST.

Teams Status

Mumbai Indians

The situation for Mumbai is actually even worse than what’s painted in the intro. Four losses out of four would have been still digestible, had even one of those gone down to the wires. But the painful truth is that Mumbai have been soundly beaten in all of their outings.

The biggest cause of concern has been the form of their captain Rohit Sharma. A deep dive into stats by ESPN this week has revealed that he has been one of the move below-par top order batsmen in IPL since 2019 with average of under 30 and strike rate of under 130.

In four outings so far this season, Sharma has a total of 80 runs at an average of just 20. Kieron Pollard is another experienced star that is struggling. He has only 47 so far.

Jasprit Bumrah has also looked off-colour and has gone wicketless in three of his four outings.

Such sub-par displays have forced Mumbai to make a number of changes – evident in the fact that they have already used 15 players just four games into the tournament.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings came out flying, notching an impressive win against Royal Challengers Bangalore in their season opener before losing to Kolkata Knight Riders.

Chasing consistency, the Kings have alternative victories and defeats and after four games, they have two wins and as many losses.

They were, however, unlucky in their last game – a defeat to Gujarat – as they had to defend 19 in the last over but unfortunately back-to-back sixes off the final two balls by Rahul Tewatia broke their hearts.

Despite their record being 50-50, it is clear to see that the Kings have got game and could be a force come playoffs time.

Mumbai are in such poor form that it makes sense for them to be the underdogs in this IPL fixture. Parimatch has Mumbai priced at 1.91 and Punjab at 1.87. Paripesa has Mumbai available for 2.068 and Punjab at 1.86. Lastly, Sportsbet has Mumbai priced at 1.93 and Punjab at 1.88.

Tipster’s Angle

Tip: Punjab Kings to win 1.88

Mumbai make a tempting case at odds of 2.068 but we tend to stay away from big-name teams that are presently mired in problems. Besides, Punjab’s top and middle order are absolutely packed with dynamite power, although they do have a long-ish tail All things considered, backing Punjab here makes far more sense. The odds have been sourced from Sportsbet.

Tip: Liam Livingstone to score more than 23.5 runs @ 1.87

England’s Liam Livingstone has been in tremendous form of late and had scores of 60 and 64 in his last two matches. He does play with a bit more reckless abandon that we’re comfortable with as gamblers, but he’s been getting runs so who are we to question his approach. Besides, it’s just 23.5 runs or more we want from him. The odds have been sourced from Parimatch.

Conclusion

MuPunjab have lost 14 and won 13 against Mumbai. This is their chance to gain parity and they should grab it because Mumbai are not always in a predicament as they are in now.
