Sunrisers Hyderabad have been out of playoffs contention for quite some time now but their bowling has clicked of late. They beat Rajasthan Royals last Monday before almost beating league leaders Chennai Super Kings in their last outing.
A win in this fixture would mean nothing for Hyderabad but it could potentially dent Kolkata’s playoffs hopes – something Hyderabad had done last year too.
Apart from playing spoilers, the only real motivation left for Hyderabad will be to try out options for future editions of the tournament.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata’s record in recent years of sealing playoffs spot has not been very promising, which is why they would want to keep things under their control with a win over Hyderabad.
They currently sit in fourth place on the points table, with 10 points to their name after a dozen games. They hold the coveted fourth spot but they cannot be complacent, considering three other teams are hot on their heels.
One relief this time, though, is that their net run rate among the fourth place-chasers is the best.
KKR, however, have other problems. Andre Russell and Lockie Ferguson are nursing injuries and it’s unclear whether either would play this game. Furthermore, their captain Eoin Morgan has been completely out of sorts since the league resumed.
