Teams Status
Sri Lanka
The opening Test was pretty much as was expected. Sri Lanka batted first, piled up a big total before bowling out the Windies easily, and then batted again to set up a mammoth target, which the tourists never came close to reaching.
The home side dominated from the very first session, with their openers – Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne – giving them a 139-run start and the Lankans never looked back.
Captain Karunaratne obviously led from the front, scoring 147 in the first innings and another 83 in the second as he was later deservedly named the man of the match. Like him, Ramesh Mendis was excellent in both the innings, taking seven wickets overall.
A blueprint has been set and the Lankans would want to follow it. Although even a Draw would get them the series win, they’d certainly want to play with the same strategy and go for a 2-0 sweep.
West Indies
The tourists were clearly the second-best side in the opening match but their main problems were with their batting.
Consistency was a massive issue as those that got some runs in the first innings fell flat in the second, and those that got runs in the second had failed earlier.
The Windies batters, as is was expected, just could not handle the Sri Lankan spin of Lasith Embuldeniya, Ramesh Mendis, and Praveen Jayawickrama, especially on days four and five wickets when the wicket had become even more spin-friendly.
Roston Chase’s five-for in the first innings and Nkrumah Bonner’s stubborn and unbeaten 68 in the final innings were the two best contributions.
It is clear that these conditions and this format are not suitable for the men from the Caribbean. Can they save the second Test? It’s very difficult to see that happening.
