New Zealand have lost yet another T20I series on their travels and they have only themselves to blame. In the second T20I, with the series on the line, the Kiwis had a brilliant start, thanks to Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell, neither of whom thought twice about taking risks.
The score was 79-1 in the 9th over when Mark Chapman departed, and following that, the remaining batters’ performance in the second half of the innings was abysmal. They eventually finished with 153-6, which was a far cry from the 200-something they had their sights set on when their top order was in full flow.
With the ball, the Kiwis had no chance. A 117-run partnership for the opening wicket between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma all but killed the game. Tim Southee was excellent in his individual capacity as he conceded just 16 runs and picked up three wickets, including those of both the Indian openers, but he did not get any support from the other bowling end as Adam Milne, Trent Boult, and Mitchell conceded loads.
India
After the dilly-dallying of the opening match, the second T20I was a job well done by the Indian side. They’ve handled the Kiwis professionally and earned for themselves a dead rubber, which they can use whichever way they like.
They can opt to go all out again and shoot for a clean sweep, which would look good after a failed World Cup campaign, or they can rest their regulars and try the untested. That can potentially fetch them some stars or starlets for the future.
One cause of concern should be the form of Deepak Chahar, who has had identical figures in both the games, finishing with 42-1 each time. It certainly is time for him to be rested.
