Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st T20I Betting Tips 11/02/2022

Zohaib Ahmed, Senior Author

The 1st T20I between Australia and Sri Lanka will be played on Feb 11 (Friday) at Sydney Cricket Ground. The match is to begin at 1:30 pm IST.

Teams Status

Australia

Australia are currently dealing with the aftermath of head coach Justin Langer’s departure. The highly successful tenure that saw the Aussies win their maiden T20 World Cup and whitewash England 4-0 in the Ashes ended on a sour note as it emerged that the players weren’t very fond of Langer’s intense style of coaching.

Thus, the home series against Sri Lanka will be the first post-Langer assignment and the man overseeing the team’s coaching needs will be senior assistant Andrew McDonald.

Also absent for Friday’s series opener will be batter Travis Head, who will instead be playing a Sheffield Shield match for NSW. Daniel Sams has been called in his place.

Among other surprises, names are Big Bash star Ben McDermott, veteran allrounder Ben McDermott, and uncapped wicketkeeper-batter, Josh Inglis.

David Warner has been dropped whereas Mitch Marsh, who had picked up an injury prior to BBL final, has been rested.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka were most recently active in the ODI format against Zimbabwe at home. Considering it was their own turf where tracks are tricky, they were expected to clean sweep but they lost a game and won the series only 2-1.

It took them a decent amount of effort to put away a weak Zimbabwe at home, which means that facing Australia in Australia is going to be super difficult for them.

They’ve recalled Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis for the series but wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella still remains out. All three were suspended for breaking Covid protocols in England last year.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Kusal Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva have all been dropped. In their place, the uncapped trio of Nuwan Thushara, Janith Liyanage, and Kamil Mishara have been added. Dinesh Chandimal and Jeffrey Vandersay are also back, thanks to strong showings in the Lanka Premier League.

Tipster’s Angle

Tip: Ben McDermott to score more than 24.5 runs @ 1.85

Those who follow Big Bash must know what kind of a devastating batter Ben McDermott has become. Granted that he hasn’t impressed at all in the 17 T20Is he’s played so far for Australia but then he’s grown so much over the past few months. His T20I average of 13.66 does not reflect the current state of his game. We believe that if given the chance, there is no reason that he wouldn’t shine in this series. In the first game, we back him to make the spread. The odds have been sourced from Sportsbet.

Tip: Sri Lanka total runs in first over – less than 4.5 @ 2.42

The current Aussie team has its tails up and is arguably the best team in the world right now. They won the T20 World Cup last year and then completely humiliated England. This is again another home series for them and they are packed with talent. They could make another completely new squad and it would still probably beat Sri Lanka. There is no way that the touring islanders, with all this knowledge, will take too many chances at the start. Step one will be to block and survive, which is why we do not see too many runs in the opening over. The odds have been sourced from Parimatch.

Conclusion

Australia are missing several key players and are without a full-time coach but even then they should have no trouble in easily winning this series. Any other outcome would be a surprise.
