Teams Status
Melbourne Stars
The manner in which Melbourne Stars opened their campaign – with a massive defeat to Sydney Sixers – it had seemed as if this was going to be a long season for them. However, two straight wins, both over the lesser Sydney side that is the Thunder, have quickly erased the sting of that painful loss.
The last of their two wins was the more impressive one as they won with six wickets and almost three overs to spare.
Andre Russell played a crucial role in that game, scoring 42 off just 21 balls in a successful run chase of 156. Afghan leggie Qais Ahmed was also brilliant, giving away just 17 runs in his four overs and picking up two important wickets. He and Adam Zampa form a rare twin leggie combo in the league, although the latter was not at his best in this particular game.
Sydney Sixers
Sydney Sixers felt hard done by in their loss to Hobart Hurricanes, with Moises Henriques expressing his disapproval of the fact that his team couldn’t use both overs of the Power Surge due to rain.
Henriques even used the word “robbed” and called for fairer rules. “I still don’t see why you can’t have an over and then four balls in the next over that are under Surge rules, and just play two balls that aren’t. It would make more sense, and I think it would be fairer for all the teams.”
Fair or not, truth be told, that extra Surge over would not have made a world of difference as the target of 196 in 18 overs was always going to be a mountain to climb.
Henriques’ fingers should actually be pointed towards his own bowlers, especially the English imports Chris Jordan and Tom Curran, both of whom collectively leaked 97 runs in their eight overs for just two wickets.
It definitely did seem like a one-off performance from the Sydney bowling unit as usually, they are very cunning and miserly with the runs.
