Teams Status
Hobart Hurricanes
Hobart Hurricanes snapped a run of two straight defeats in their last game, beating the depleted Brisbane Heat comfortably and by eight wickets.
The win was never under doubt, primarily due to the state of the Heat’s reconstructed squad and also because they posted a mere 144. And once Hobart’s Ben McDermott got going it was practically game over.
The explosive Hobart opener had had two quiet games after back-to-back centuries and it was becoming a cause of concern for the side, especially with Matthew Wade’s game petering off over the past few weeks.
McDermott nearly scored a mind-boggling third century of the tournament, falling just seven short of the feat.
Wade, meanwhile, did not play the last game and is likely to miss multiple games for reasons Hobart management won’t disclose. With him unavailable, Peter Handscomb will continue to lead while McDermott will continue to keep wickets until Wade is gone.
Sydney Thunder
Sydney Thunder, as told in one of the previous previews, are the form team of the tournament right now, having notched five straight wins.
Their latest victory was a big one and it came against Melbourne Renegades. The 129-run win was the doing of their batter Daniel Sams – who smashed an unbeaten 98 off 44 to power the team to 209 – and their bowlers, who bowled out the Gades for a mere 80 runs.
The lesser Sydney side’s rich vein of form means that they have soared to the second spot on the points table, usurping their more illustrious city rivals, the Sixers.
